Artistic direction - Concept to Execution
Since November 2024, I have had the pleasure of working as the Artistic Director for Babette, a French bistro located in the heart of Central, Hong Kong. This report details the creative journey of shaping Babette’s visual identity—from conceptualization to execution—across both digital and physical touchpoints. The goal was to capture the essence of a welcoming, seasonally inspired French bistro while ensuring a seamless and elegant brand experience.
Conceptualization and Research: The foundation of this project was an in-depth exploration of French bistro aesthetics, reinterpreted for the vibrant, cosmopolitan setting of Hong Kong. Drawing inspiration from traditional brasserie design and modern hospitality branding, I developed a visual language that balances authenticity with a fresh, contemporary feel. Mood boards, typography studies, and color palettes were carefully curated to reflect Babette’s focus on warmth, simplicity, and conviviality.
Logo Design and Brand Identity: At the core of Babette’s branding is a logo that embodies the bistro’s inviting and refined character. Influenced by classic French signage and understated elegance, the design reflects a timeless yet modern sensibility. A sophisticated color palette—rooted in natural, earthy tones—was chosen to convey a sense of warmth and authenticity, while typography and graphic elements reinforce the welcoming and effortless charm of Babette.
Graphic Elements and Illustrations: Custom illustrations and graphic motifs were designed to enrich Babette’s storytelling. These elements appear throughout menus, packaging, and marketing materials, creating a cohesive and recognizable identity. Every detail, from menu layouts to signage, was crafted to enhance the guest experience while reinforcing Babette’s identity as a place of gathering and connection.
Digital and Social Media Integration: A strong digital presence was essential in introducing Babette to the Hong Kong dining scene. Social media platforms were leveraged to showcase the bistro’s evolving menu, thoughtfully curated wine selection, and inviting atmosphere. Photography, design templates, and brand-aligned content strategies ensured a consistent and engaging online identity, bridging the gap between digital storytelling and in-person experiences.
Physical Assets and Marketing Collateral: From elegant menu designs to refined business cards and promotional materials, every touchpoint was carefully considered to reflect Babette’s identity. Printed assets were designed with a tactile, high-quality finish to complement the restaurant’s understated sophistication. Thoughtful signage, coasters, and takeaway packaging further extended Babette’s visual language into every customer interaction.
Developing Babette’s brand identity has been a rewarding journey of translating French bistro culture into an approachable yet refined experience in Hong Kong. Through careful attention to detail and a commitment to authenticity, Babette’s branding captures the essence of shared moments over good food and wine. As the bistro continues to grow, I am confident that its strong visual identity will support its mission of bringing people together around simple, honest, and delicious cuisine.
